Philip Bowles '69
Bowles Farming Company, Inc. - President
We grow cotton, alfalfa, grains, tomatoes and other field crops near Los Banos, CA. Our family farm was founded n 1856. My nephew, Cannon Michael '90 is a vice president of the firm. Having been in business for 175 years, we understand something about sustainability, resource conservation, and the importance of long range thinking. We have maintained large areas of natural habitat, which serve as in-sectaries for beneficial insects, homes for useful predators like hawks and owls, and nurturing places for the human soul. Agriculture, no matter whether it is organic or not, profoundly disrupts a landscape I believe that environmental responsibility means realizing the maximum value from every resource put to use: land, fertilizer, water, fuel, labor. The fashionable model of "sustainability" proposes a less intense and less efficient set of practices, which of necessity requires far more land, water, labor, and fuel per unit of economic output. I call it a race between the Prius and the ox-cart. Both have small carbon and emissions footprints, but are radically different solutions. We'll see who wins.

WhereInTarnation.com
The company researches geographic locations in the United States with specific family names, and then matches them with eye-catching art work. The art work is then available on t-shirts, mugs, mousepads, posters, cards, aprons and more. WhereInTarnation is entirely digital, with no warehousing, no inventory, and no overhead. Therefore, no carbon footprint. Four Rivers Inc. - President
We build green single family homes in Southwestern Colorado. Our houses use design principles that take advantage of orientation and landscape, seeking to maximize use of the energy flowing through the system( i.e. wind , sun , water). They receive an e-star rating by scoring above 90 on the HERS index. Generally our homes operate on 60% of the energy it would take to run a similar "conventional" home. We seek to minimize use of materials through advanced framing and proper opening placement. We add a small solar system that allows the owners to implement a larger one as their budget allows while offsetting the cost of purchasing renewable energy credits. We receive a built Green Colorado rating by both energy efficiency and total avoidance of toxic off-gassing materials in favor of natural finishes. We also include advanced waste treatment systems keeping these elements of waste water and "soil" within the system which fosters a deeper sense of personal responsibility.

Simple Shoes
product line manager
We're a nice little shoe company with big ideas and a lot of hope. A couple of years back, we realized we're in an industry that creates a lot of waste... and rather than keep to the norm, we decided to do something about it and set out to change the way our shoes were made. Which pretty much is where we are today... at the crossroads of here and now, aware of our responsibility to the planet while trying to pay the bills. A nice little shoe company getting in touch with its inner hippie.
