Spring Alumni Sports Day Winners...

Friday, May 30, 2008   (0 Comments)

Over 40 alumni from near and far travelled to Cate to celebrate alumni sports day. The event was a tremendous success with the alumni teams winning two of the three contests and all alumni having a great time catching up with their old coaches and meeting the new Caties.

The day started with alumni Jake Wallace '96, Phil McCabe '96, Mike Cass '88, Matthew Morphy '84, Marty "I’ll play all three sports today" Levison '02 and Chris Skelton '02 taking on the Varsity Volleyball game. Obviously intimidated by the amount of receding hairlines on the court, the Varsity succumbed to the alumni in all four matches. Said Coach Gary Peirce, "I knew the alumni had it all along. I kept telling them that if they didn’t win, they didn’t get any beer at the end of the game. Obviously, they played better after hearing that."

Baseball had a record turnout this year, with former CIF all stars returning to play Coach Soto’s undefeated Cate Rams. Paul Grumet ’99 started on the mound for the Alumni Rams, throwing good innings with Levison ’02 behind the plate. Tony Davidson ’04 was called from the bullpen to pitch middle relief and Nick Wilson ’95 closed the game for the alumni Rams. The alumni bats were in great form with alumni Mark Semegen '04, Chris Petrin '00, Chris Gough '99 and others getting great hits. Other alumni, including C.J, Donnely '03 and Jesse Davidson '00 showed their valuable skills on the field, ultimately defeating the Varsity 6-2.

When the lacrosse game started, the alumni knew they were up for a difficult day when they heard that there were only three lines (two real lines) available for midfield. Nevertheless, Player/Coach Paul Denison '79 led the team on the field, where the alumni held their own with a much thinner, faster, and in shape Varsity squad for the first half. Varisty Goalies, Denison '79, Colin Browne '95, Marty Levison '02, and Josh Soper '03 all played phenomenal minutes in the box and kept the Cate Varsity from building an insurmountable lead. The seventies represented well on the field as well with Dibble '78, Avenali '73, and Chilcott '75, playing valuable minutes. Finally with 2 seconds left and the Varsity leading 9-8, Coach Denison called time out and drew up a play calling for Wes Meyer '96 to get the ball to Alex Mast '93 in the crease. Alex got off a shot, but Goalie and recent graduate Griffin Drescher '08 made a great save to save the Varisty’s first win over the alumni in many, many years.

Bruised muscles and egos were nursed back to health at Grayson Bryant’s '95 apartment in the High House after the game.
