Dear Cate Alumni,
We are writing to let you know about an exciting new summer program Cate is initiating for the nation's environmental educators. It is called the Sustainable Systems Institute and it will run from June 21-26.
If you feel the Institute might be of interest to your friends who teach, or to the teachers in the schools where your daughters or sons are enrolled, we hope you will forward this PDF brochure. We are extending the enrollment period in order to provide some last-minute enthusiasts the opportunity to enroll.
The purpose of the Sustainable Systems Institute is to provide environmental educators with high-end presentations, hands-on workshops, and trips to operating facilities with a focus on five critical sustainable systems--1) grid-connected solar electricity, 2) utility-scale wind electricity, 3) sustainable agriculture, 4) municipal solid waste, and 5) alternative-fuels transportation. Unlike many programs across the country, all elements of Cate's program will be taught by the businesses and organizations that are powering the Green Economy. Our current partnerships include Clipper Windpower, Santa Barbara Community Environmental Council, Sharp-USA Solar Solutions Group, Waste Management, Santa Barbara Certified Farmers Market Association, Ampelos Winery, and the Central Coast Vineyard Team.
So far, we have enrolled teachers from Atlanta, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, and the Los Angeles area.
Please let me know if you would like additional information about the Sustainable Systems Institute. And, thank you for forwarding the message below and brochure to teachers and schools.

Message for teachers:
Sustainable Systems Institute: Daily Schedule Our curricular model for the Sustainable Systems Institute is to allocate one day to each sustainable system (solar, wind, solid waste management, sustainable agriculture, and transportation).
Each day's program will begin with a morning session incorporating classroom instruction and experiments/demonstrations coupled with an afternoon session of hands-on activities and/or site visits to operating facilities. And, each day's curriculum will also include a keynote speaker who will address topics related to public policy, regulatory issues, or community implementation strategies. This educational model will provide an effective synthesis of classroom, hands-on, and field-based education taught by actual practitioners of sustainable systems.
An Example...Grid-connected solar electricity This one-day program will be presented by Sharp-USA's Solar Energy Solutions Group's ( www.solar.sharpusa.com) senior manager of training and the director of Sharp's Solar Academy. Teachers will receive a modified version of the training manual that is distributed to general contractors and electricians.
The day will begin with a classroom session that will teach the science and engineering of solar electricity (history, the solar resource, how solar works, how to determine if a site has sufficient solar resources, how solar cells and modules are manufactured, examples of solar projects, etc.). The culminating morning project will be to use teachers' annual electric bills and the square footage of their homes' roofs to calculate how much solar electricity a grid-connected system could offset the electrical consumption by selling power back to your utility company.
After lunch the folks from Sharp will conduct a hands-on session during which teachers will learn how to wire the components and to measure the output of a solar electric system.
The day will conclude with a tour of Cate School's new homes that recently received LEED Platinum certification from the US Green Building Council. While the Sharp staff will pay particular attention to the solar electric systems, the project's general contractors will provide a detailed tour and description of the green building materials and systems that are incorporated into the award-winning homes.
Throughout the Institute sessions will also be scheduled for teachers to discuss how the information they learned can be appropriately integrated into their classrooms.
Additional Examples...Our Partners We hope you will recognize that we are assembling a top-notch team of real-world sustainability practitioners to deliver the Institute's curriculum. Here is a small sampling of other companies and organizations that have partnered with us. I've provided weblinks so that you can learn about them.
